Guide to Reference (Background) Resources

What does "reference" mean?

Reference sources provide general information about a variety of topics. Reference sources are a great place to start research or enhance a search strategy. Types of reference sources include:

  • Almanacs
  • Atlases and maps
  • Bibliographies
  • Biographies
  • Dictionaries
  • Directories
  • Encyclopedias (general and subject)
  • Handbooks, like the Handbook of Texas Online

Note: Physical reference sources are shelved on the first floor of the Sul Ross Library in Alpine, separate from the rest of the circulating collection. Reference sources cannot be removed from the Library.
