Common Misconceptions by First Year Students

undefined

But hey, guess what! These things are misconceptions -- meaning, they just aren't true. Here are our counterpoints:

  • Everyone is a learner and everyone can benefit from collaborating with other learners.
  • If every research question had just one right answer, there would be far fewer published papers out there! When every learner brings their personal experiences and ideas to the table, the potential for considering reference questions (and answers) from more perspectives grows.
  • We at the Library think that the free internet is a wonderful and magical place. Even still, the Library offers access to publications and resources that you just can't find in the free internet. The Library also offers skill-building to help you assess what you find on the free internet so you can be confident in whichever sources you use. That's why so many people send you to us for your research assignments.
  • Take the Library's Virtual Tour and then tell us we're just a building full of books...
  • We can talk all day about how every learner needs to develop (and maintain) their skills in assessing sources' quality. Don't take anything at face value, even if you find it at the Library!
